UPDATE: 25th Anniversary Celebration is July 11, 2015, 5:30-7:30 pm.
Based in Harpersville, Alabama, close to Birmingham, El Gezira Riding Academy celebrates 25 years of developing horsemen and women, teaching horsemanship from the ground up. With combined training experience of more than 70 years, owner Pam Ibrahim and husband, Galal Abdulla, have worked tirelessly to build horsemen capable of entering and enhancing the equine industry. This summer, El Gezira continues a long tradition of teaching the responsibility of caring for and properly handling equines through their summer horse camp program.
The summer camp program, a staple of the local equine community, is sought after by equestrians not only across the state, but across the Southeast. With three levels of skill-based, week-long camps, riders are placed according to their abilities. Those applying for the camps are required to have previously taken riding lessons, either on their own or with El Gezira.
“The advanced nature of our horse camps is what serious riders seek out,” says Ibrahim. “The fast-paced learning activities we provide are why it is important that newcomers to our program are equipped with basic horsemanship skills before attending.”
The camp program is a unique learning experience in the horse world. El Gezira is equipped with a covered arena, sleeping quarters, swimming pool and, of course, horses! In addition, the Academy is equipped with a club house which includes two great rooms, three full bathrooms with showers, two bunk rooms that sleep 25 campers, and windows and porches overlooking green pastures.
Campers look forward to full and exciting days with a schedule that includes, riding lessons, tack and horse care and inspection, a daily lecture which includes care of horses, medical needs, course design, jumping, and dressage didactics. Each student will work one on one as well as in a group setting were the total horsemanship experience is stressed. This requires all aspects of horse care in which campers are required to participate. Swimming and fun, as well as socially-interactive activities, end each camp day.
Ibrahim believes, “Overnight horsemanship camps for children of all ages, with dedicated instruction, provide important life-long lessons and create unforgettable childhood memories.”
